The organisation of the Church of England into parish areas with clearly defined boundaries dates from the eighth century , and over the years it has served a useful purpose. The parish has provided a recognised area of mission and pastoral responsibility, and people within the parish have had their own parish church and their own parish priest to turn to and to provide the occasional services of baptism, marriage and funeral services. As the years have passed and with the increase in population, villages, towns and cities have grown, new parishes have been created and parish boundaries have changed.
Our own parish of Tardebigge is one of the ancient parishes and it has been in existence for well over a thousand years. It used to include most of the parish of St Stephen, Redditch, including Batchley, and also Webheath; but these became separate parishes in 1855 and 1981. | |
